The city of Boston issued an advisory today that the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and other events being held this weekend may delay traffic and will result in additional pedestrian traffic on local streets.
"The Boston Transportation Department is urging both drivers and pedestrians to proceed with caution when travelling around the City. As always, those coming into Boston for these events are encouraged to take the MBTA," read a statement from the BTD.
The annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer starts on Saturday, May 19, the event will begin at 6 AM at the UMass Boston campus in Dorchester. The route to be taken is Harborwalk to Day Boulevard, and into downtown Boston before making its way to Milton through Hyde Park.
On Sunday, May 20, the event will begin at 6 a.m. in Milton and enter Boston via Neponset Trail, crossing Granite Avenue, right onto Hallet Street, to Pope John Paul Park, to Neponset Trail, exiting at Taylor Street, left onto Water Street, right onto Tenean Street, continuing onto Morrissey Boulevard, right onto University Drive back to UMass-Boston.
The city also advised that Sunday's Haitian-American Unity Parade — which starts at 1 p.m. in Mattapan Square— will result in road closures. "To accommodate the parade, Blue Hill Avenue will be closed from Noon to 4 PM between River Street and Talbot Avenue. In addition, temporary signs reading Tow Zone No Stopping, Sunday Parade will be posted at the following locations.
Blue Hill Avenue, east side, from River Street (Mattapan Square) to Talbot Avenue
Blue Hill Avenue on Center Island, east side of island from Babson Street to Freemont Street
Babson Street, both sides, from Blue Hill Avenue heading northerly to Freemont Street
Talbot Avenue, both sides, from Blue Hill Avenue to Helen Street."
