Detours prompted by a months-long MWRA water pipe project triggered heavy back-ups in and around Lower Mills this afternoon. One motorist reported that he sat in a 20-minute queue on Richmond Street, which was one of the detour routes used to divert traffic from Adams Street— where digging is taking place today and all week.
Jeff McLaughlin, project manager for the MWRA, said that the agency is "working with Boston Police" to attempt to fill several detail slots that went unfilled today— which compounded the problem. A sign on Gallivan Boulevard, McLaughlin said, was in place to warn motorists that only local traffic should travel on Adams Street from Gallivan Boulevard.
