Police arrest man they say they found asleep in a schoolyard with a loaded gun

The Boston Police Department reports officers investigating a call about an unconscious man in the yard of the Oliver Wendell Holmes on School Street around 6 a.m. on Wednesday found a sleeping man with a gun tucked under one arm.

"Fearing for their safety, the officers quickly removed the gun from under the suspects arm area and woke him up," police said in a statement. "The suspect became startled and attempted to get up and struggled briefly with the officers. Officers quickly gained control of the suspect and secured him with handcuffs for safety. A backpack was also recovered from the suspect that contained two digital scales and a black ski-mask. The gun taken from the suspect was loaded with several rounds of ammunition."

Rodney Cooper, 18, of Dorchester, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm in public, having a firearm on school property and trespassing, police say.
