A suspect was arrested Monday night after a man was shot on Dorchester Avenue just outside Ashmont MBTA station. The victim, who was shot in the stomach, was transported to Boston Medical Center with what first responders described as "serious" injuries.

The 6:30 p.m. shooting left the station cordoned off with buses and commuters stuck as police swarmed the area. A description of the suspect, described as a black male wearing a black hoodie, white undershirt, white shoes and hat was quickly broadcast to officers. Around 8:30 p.m. Boston Police told the Reporter that a suspect was in custody for allegedly shooting the victim at "point-blank" range with a .45 calibre gun. The suspect was previously known to police and his image was captured by surveillance cameras.

Police report arresting Tyrell Griffiths, 21, a few blocks away on Wrentham Street.

Griffiths faces arraignment tomorrow in Dorchester Municipal Court on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

Police credit a network of cameras with leading them to Griffiths: "Immediately after the shooting, Detectives from C-11, with support from the Real Time Crime Center, were able to view camera footage from the scene via BPD's camera network. Because of this quick action, a suspect was identified fleeing the area and a detailed description was given out over BPD radio channels."

The shooting is the latest violent incident at the busy commuter hub. In August, a 22 year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot and wounded a man outside of the station on a Wednesday evening as stunned commuters watched and ran. Balfour McLean was arrested following a footchase by officers who happened to be within earshot of the 7:30 p.m. incident. His victim, who survived, was shot in the abdomen. In addition to gun and assault charges, McLean was arraigned for being an armed career criminal.
