Man charged with shooting police officer on Esmond Street

The Boston Police Department reports arresting a Dorchester man on charges he shot an officer on Esmond Street Monday night.

The officer's ballistic vest worked as intended and prevented serious injuries, police say. The officer and others had responded to Esmond Street on a 911 call about a man with a gun outside shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Avery Lewis, 31, was arrested on Esmond Street right after the shooting.

Lewis was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officers, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a large-capacity feeding device, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, trafficking between 36 and 100 grams of cocaine and resisting arrest, police say.
