Contractors have begun work on a $500,000 public works project in Mattapan Square. The 800-foot median strip along Blue Hill Avenue between River and Babson streets will be rebuilt and lined with plantings supported by a new irrigation system. Large plantings will also be added to the intersection of River and Blue Hill.
Funding for the effort was secured through the Legislature and is being completed by workers for the city of Boston. State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and Rep. Dan Cullinane— who worked to get state funds for the effort—visited the site last month with Katie Choe, the city of Boston’s chief engineer and director of construction.
Bill Egan, chief civil engineer for the city, said that the job should be completed in October.
Construction will be happening daily from 9:30a.m to 2:30p.m.
“To ensure long term survival of the greenery the plantings will take place in the fall,” said Rep. Cullinane.
