Dorchester man indicted in January shooting of Boston Police officer

A Dorchester man accused of shooting a Boston Police officer during an attempted traffic stop in January was indicted on 12 counts today by a grand jury, the Suffolk County district attorney’s office announced.

Grant Headley, 27, allegedly opened fire on officers who had been seeking him for allegedly selling crack cocaine. Headley was on probation following a five-year state prison sentence on a 2009 gun and drug conviction when officers pulled him over on Mt. Bowdoin Terrace on Jan. 5.

He sprang from the car firing, police said. One of the bullets struck officer Kurt Stokinger, 37, a nine-year veteran of the force and a plainclothes member of the Boston Police Drug Control Unit in Area B-3, in the leg. Stokinger was seriously wounded, transported to Boston Medical Center for treatment, and later released.

Headley fled on foot toward Geneva Avenue, pursued by officers. With the assistance of a civilian witness, officers apprehended Headley in the driveway of a Geneva Avenue residence, according to the district attorney’s office.

The Suffolk County Grand Jury indicted Headley on the following charges: intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery by discharging a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm as a second or subsequent offense, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of a large-capacity weapon and feeding device, unlawful possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, unlawful distribution of a Class B substance as a second or subsequent offense, unlawful possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and being a Level II armed career criminal.

During his Thursday arraignment in Dorchester Municipal Court, Headley was ordered held on $1.5 million cash bail. His next arraignment date is to be determined, but jurisdiction has moved to Suffolk Superior Court, according to the district attorney’s office.
