The Boston Police Department reports arresting Paul Brown, 25, on Friday on charges he and a Randolph man tried to gun down two other men in an Allston apartment on Dec. 30.

Detectives from District D-14 in Brighton and the Boston Police SWAT unit arrested Brown at 33 Tremlett St. on charges of armed assault in a dwelling, armed robbery and assault with intent to murder, police say. Brown was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Brown was charged with a 2006 murder in Quincy, but a Norfolk Superior Court jury acquitted him last year. A second man was convicted of the murder two months later.

Brown's arrest comes a week after police nabbed William Vargas, 24, of Randolph on the same charges for the double shooting on Chester Street in Allston. Both the victims, men aged 23 and 56, were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds and survived.

Prosecutors say Brown and Vargas traveled to Chester Street after agreeing to sell the victims $1,500 worth of marijuana. After the victims handed over the money to Vargas, prosecutors charged, Brown entered the room, took out a gun and began shooting, the DA's office says.
