Two Roxbury teens arrested for murder of store clerk

UPDATE: The two were ordered held without bail this morning.

Onyx White, 16, and Martin Freeles, 17, were arrested today and charged with the murder of Geraldo Serrano at the Hermanos Unidos store on Dudley Street Sunday morning.

Both will be tried as adults, Police Commissioner Ed Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said at a press conference tonight.

Police say the two shot Serrano, 71, when he resisted their robbery around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Suffolk County prosecutors say a clerk at the front of the store was handing over money when Serrano approached from the rear and "resisted" the robbery attempt. One of the two shot Serrano, who then reached for a cane, at which point the gunman shot him again, fatally wounding him.

Davis said investigators have the gun used in the murder and that cooperation from the community helped lead police to the two.

"I hope that today's development brings a small amount of relief to Mr. Serrano's grieving family, who are trying to cope in the wake of their unimaginable loss," he said.

"An incident like this sends shockwaves through the community," Conley said. "Whole generations of the Serrano family lost a part of themselves. The people who live and work in Uphams Corner lost a fixture and a friend. What was taken away on Feb. 21 can never be replaced. But we can do everything in our power to hold accountable those who took Geraldo Serrano."
