Our four All-Star Basketball teams competing in the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. Basketball league are nearing the end of regular season play and hoping for an invitation to their respective post-season tournament. Our Boys 12 & under team won their most recent home game by a score of 41-39 over the South Boston Boys and Girls Club. Leading the team were De’Andre Dew-Hollis (16), Erilson Teixeira (9), Luis Rodrigues (4), Keyshawn Barnes-Lacy (3), Joseph Norman (2), Eben Butler (2), Bryan DeLaCruz (2), Deijon Holmes (2), Darian Kavu (1) and Kevin Zarnoch. Our Girls 14 & under All-Stars also pulled out a win in their most recent game, a 20-19 victory over the John M. Barry Boys and Girls Club of Newton. Leading the way for our Stars were D’Mitra Weathers (12), Daynaja DePina (6), Alicia Feliciano (2), Mya Nunes, Deanaja Dunbar-Lee, Jasmine Credle, Betzalee Matos and Shannon Zarnoch. Our Boys 15 & under team evened their record at 3-3 after winning their most recent game, a 77-75 overtime thriller against the Lynn Boys and Girls Club. The home team was led by Terrell Davis (39), Walter Dew-Hollis (18), Saide Smith (9), Devante Teixeira (5), Mauro Barbosa (2), Derek Dykens (2), Christine DaSilva (2), Armani Correia, JaCorey Kindell, James Alves and Morris Barnes. Lastly, our Boys 18 & under team stands at 5-3 following a double overtime win versus the Waltham Boys and Girls Club, 92-90. Leading the squad were Bernard Barbosa (29), Christopher Shelton (24), Paul Lewis (11), Eduardo DeLeon (9), Jay Rodrigues (6), Danielson DePina (5), Jordan Williams (4), Alberto Monteiro (2), Evandro Teixeira (2), Anthony DoSouto, and Rafael Garcia. Looking forward, the Athletic program will host registration on 3/17 from 10:00-3:00 p.m. for the 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League (ages 13-18) and the Co-ed Intramural Indoor Soccer program which will include a 4-team league, Clinic (ages 6 & 7) and All-Star component. Walter Denney Youth Center Events
This Thursday, March 15th we will be celebrating our 9-year Anniversary of providing programs at our Walter Denney Clubhouse located in the Harbor Point section of Dorchester. Club members and their parents are invited to stop by the Center to take part in a variety of family activities. There will be food, games, tours and more. The following week, on March 20th we will host a Health & Wellness Fair which will also be open to members and their parents. These special events complement ongoing programs such as U-Mass Tutoring, Arts Classes, the Patriot’s Kids Café, Swim Lessons with U-Mass and our many small group clubs. Education Program News
The Education program offers drop-in Homework Help on a Monday to Thursday schedule (2:00-5:30) in the Education Center. Homework Help is complemented with a One-to-One Tutoring program that meets weekly. Please note that pre-registration is required. Throughout the week we also offer small group clubs such as Mad Science (mondays & wednesdays), Kids College (mondays), Dough!, Time & Money (tuesdays), KidsLit (thursdays) and T.G.I.F. (fridays). Upcoming special events include our Family Literacy Night (3/23) for members and parents and the Boston College Splash - College Tour (4/1) for High School students. Fine Arts Program Exhibits at the State House
Congratulations to ten of our members who were recognized this week by seeing their artwork and photographs entered into the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs exhibit which will be held at the State House in June. The following members will have their works presented: Barry Pritchard, Najwah Nelson, Aja Credle, Michelle Beazley, Kora Bazile, Kyla Sneed, Ivanildo DaMoura, Karla Santana, Emily Espinal and Kelly Anne Talavera. In addition to the exhibit, members in the Arts program are currently working on pieces to be included in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Victim Witness Advocate Calendar. Once the winning pieces are chosen, the Attorney General will visit the Club to acknowledge the artists.
