Rain, high tide causes Morrissey Boulevard shutdown

Thursday's heavy rain and wind has closed sections of Morrissey Boulevard, but roads are expected to reopen in time for rush hour traffic.

Currently the expressway exit onto Morrissey is closed to traffic, as well as segments of the boulevard between Neponset Circle and Popes Hill and between Freeport Street and the University of Massachusetts Boston exit.

Department of Conservation and Recreation officials said a full moon and today's storm caused tides to rise to approximately 13 feet, covering segments of the busy roadway. Officials expect the water to recede by about 3 p.m. and closed roads will be open to rush hour traffic by about 4 p.m.

DCR spokesperson SJ Port said drivers could expect similar shutdowns during high tide tomorrow if the rainy weather continues into tomorrow.
