Chimney fire temporarily shuts down Uphams Corner library

A small chimney fire closed down the Uphams Corner branch of the Boston Public Library for three days last week. There was no damage to the library, but the fire generated a “small amount of smoke,” leading to its closure on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, according to a library spokeswoman.

Library spokeswoman Gina Perille said the fire occurred because library staffers restarted the boiler on Wednesday, after discovering the wrong type of heating oil had been delivered.

The Columbia Road library, which has been housed in a municipal building since 1904, reopened on Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.

BPL officials and developers of the former St. Kevin’s school property, located nearby, have expressed support for relocating the library inside a new residential building on the former school site.

The current library has been called outdated by library supporters.

The developers of St. Kevin’s, in documents submitted to the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 2010, called the library “unsafe,” later clarifying that they meant that it was poorly laid out, meaning parents or guardians could lose sight of children. Separately, the basement of the library was converted from a swimming pool and sometimes leaks during storms. Library officials disputed the characterizations.
