Former City Councillor At-Large Sam Yoon on Tuesday sent an email to supporters urging them to vote for incumbents Ayanna Pressley and Felix Arroyo in next week's municipal election.
The name of former City Councillor Michael Flaherty, who ran on a joint "ticket" with Yoon in the 2009 mayoral race, went unmentioned in the email. Flaherty is running to reclaim one of the four City Council At-Large slots. After Yoon was knocked out in the 2009 mayoral preliminary, Flaherty proposed a team-up -- Yoon would get the job of deputy mayor if the pair won -- that was dubbed "Floon."
"There’s a real fight for the four At-Large seats – and progressives like us need to make sure that Ayanna Pressley and Felix Arroyo win," Yoon wrote Tuesday. "This is not the time to move backwards."
Yoon, once a Fields Corner resident, moved to the Washington D.C. area in fall 2010, taking a job as the head of a nonprofit.
"City elections in Boston - when the office of Mayor is not on the ballot, like this year - are always low-turnout, and usually dominated by older, more conservative voters," Yoon added, providing links to the websites of Pressley and Arroyo. "If we don’t get people of color and progressives out to vote, we could end up losing one of our strongest voices in city government."
Yoon was the first Asian-American to run for office in Boston and the first to be elected.
The City Council At-Large election is set for Nov. 8. Other candidates include incumbents Stephen Murphy and John Connolly, and William Dorcena of Hyde Park and Sean Ryan of Jamaica Plain.
