The Melville Park Neighborhood Association is petitioning the city’s elections department to change their present polling location at Oliver Wendell Holmes School, citing little available parking and low turnout.

The association voted Tuesday night to send a letter to the department and local elected officials to explore the possibility of moving the location.

The polling location for Ward 17 Precinct 3 was recently moved to the Holmes School, on School St., after the Lucy Stone School was closed.

Doreen Treacy, a longtime civic activist, suggested 450 Washington St., which is owned by the Codman Square Health Center and home to its technology center. It is around the corner from the original polling location at the Lucy Stone School.

Treacy, who works in the building for DotWell, a community-based organization that works with the health center, said the building already has many people coming through its doors. “You have a natural constituency,” she said. “People are there already.”

State Rep. Marty Walsh, a Dorchester Democrat who attended the association meeting, sounded a supportive note for the 450 Washington St. location. Walsh said the building has to be handicapped accessible and be able to store election equipment before and after the day of the primary and general election. “I don’t think it’ll be a problem as long as we get involvement from most of the precinct,” Walsh said.
