It was a banner year for St. Brendan's Girls CYO softball and the Midgets were not the only show in town. The St. Brendan's Juniors (under age 19) were champions as well this year. The team consisted of a seasoned group of athletes who had seen the finals before, but had never won the championship.
There was a great deal of parity in the league with Gate of Heaven, St. Theresa, Sacred Heart & St. Brendan's knocking each other off during the regular season. The St. Brendan's girls finished with a 6-2 record and faced an experienced Sacred Heart team in the finals.
The talent level on both sides was impressive. Like all the tournaments this year, it took a third game to decide the winner and came right down to the final out.
The series started with a 7-5 victory followed by a 9-3 defeat. The last game was a thriller and ended with a 200 foot throw from center field to the plate to deny the tying run in the last inning of a game. St. Brendan's won by a 12-11 score. Brian Doherty & Ed Doolin did a great job with the coaching.
Congratulations to a great bunch teenagers who could act as role models to the younger girls in the parish. It's a tough act to follow, but there is a great deal of promise within the 100 plus girls program.
The team would like to say a special thanks to their sponsor, The Pour House, and the fans that followed them.
