Several liquor licenses for Dorchester and Mattapan already approved by the city remain under state review while a second round of new applicants from this spring is waiting for approvals at the city level.
The licenses are part of the first two waves of the 225 new licenses put on offer by the state via a new law that went into effect in 2024 with the goal of getting them issued by summer 2026.
The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC) has approved 17 of the new licenses the city okayed in February, but only one in Dorchester or Mattapan has gotten through that process so far: One Family Diner on Bowdoin Street.
Still pending at the ABCC are Murl’s Kitchen (10-18 Bowdoin St.), Fresh Food Generation (191 Talbot Ave.), Blue Mountain Jamaican Restaurant (1301 Blue Hill Ave.), Zoo New England/Franklin Park Zoo, and Minina Café (432 Geneva Ave.)
Meanwhile, hearings have taken place at the Boston Licensing Board in preparation for a second wave of license approvals, which, chairperson Kathleen Joyce said, would be decided by a vote on or after May 23.
Last week, the board heard an application from the founders of the Gourmet Kreyol food truck, who plan to open a tapas restaurant in Codman Square at 657 Washington St. with a fusion of Haitian, Dominican, and Cuban food and drinks. The new establishment would be called Doune & Pepe Restaurant, said owner Nathalie LeCorps.
“This would be one of the only sit-down dining experiences in Codman Square and I don’t think there are any other liquor licenses in the area except at Fresh Food Generation [on Talbot Avenue],” LeCorps said. “People want to be able to dine out for special occasions without leaving their neighborhood.”
The location would have 49 seats for dining, and, LeCorps said, she has received the support of the Codman Square Neighborhood Council.
Also applying last week was Cool Shades Jamaican Restaurant at 388 Blue Hill Ave. in Grove Hall – a restaurant Andre Williams has operated for two years. Other previous hearings include Sorrel and Lime Function Facility on Blue Hill Avenue by Franklin Field and Molinari’s Italian Restaurant at 789 Adams St. in Adams Village.
