Neighbors rally to support family of stroke-stricken BPD sergeant

City neighborhoods and the policy community are rallying around a veteran Boston Police officer who suffered a stroke while running a road race last month. One show of support for Sgt. Jack Hynes and his family was the large gathering that turned out at a fund-raiser held on Wed., July 10, at the Playwright in South Boston.

He is making steady progress in his recovery, according to reports, but has a long road ahead of him at Spaulding Rehab.

“Sgt. Hynes is very active in the community,” said Lisa Searcy, who has helped to rally support for him and his family. “He’s a dad, he’s a husband, and he was just running a race and he collapsed, he had a stroke.”

Hynes, who joined the force in 1996, has worked in several posts over the years, including Dorchester’s C-11 and B-3 districts.

Searcy, who is passionate about bringing “common unity” back into the community, runs a non-profit called iBlossom that is best known for serving girls and young women. But she swung into action to assist the Hynes family by acquiring raffle items for the fundraiser, including a signed Celtics jersey from the Shamrock Foundation and two memorabilia boxes from the New England Patriots Foundation.

“If someone in our community is in need, this is what we do, said Searcy. “IBlossom supports whoever, however we can.”
