Education nonprofit sends grants aimed at literacy to Dorchester, Mattapan schools

The Boston Schools Fund, a non-profit organization that seeks to advance educational equity in Boston, has announced a second round of funding as part of its $2.3 million PEAK Grants (Partnering with Educators to Accelerate Knowledge) partnership with the Boston Public Schools (BPS).

This allotment is focused on supporting high-quality literacy instruction and improving student reading outcomes in support of BPS’s Equitable Literacy Initiative.

The second cohort of Peak schools for the 2023-24 school year will include three local schools: the Mather Elementary in Dorchester; the Mildred Avenue K-8 School in Mattapan; and the Russell Elementary in Dorchester.

In the upcoming school year, BPS will maintain the instructional focus on Equitable Literacy across all content areas to strengthen its multi-tiered systems of support via strong tier 1 instruction– laying a strong Tier 1 infrastructure to become a fully inclusive district and expand access to bilingual/native language instruction. This work includes a focus on the implementation of high-quality instructional materials and curricula that provide students with research-based, standards-aligned, grade-level content that includes culturally and linguistically sustaining practices.

“Improving literacy instruction is key to unlocking our students’ full potential,” said Mather Elementary School Principal Hai Son. “The grants will enable us to implement evidence-based practices and enhance our students’ reading abilities. We are excited about the positive impact this will have on their educational journeys.”

The five aforementioned schools will join the first group, which includes Conservatory Lab Charter School in Dorchester.
