Deeqo Jibril, who was a candidate for the district council 7 seat in 2017, is now running for the District 4 seat that will be left open by Andrea Campbell.

Jibril announced her intent to run on Saturday. She highlighted her work as a Neighborhood Business Manager at the City of Boston’s Economic Development Department and at the Children Services of Roxbury.

Jibril has also worked as an advocate on behalf of families for ABCD Housing and Roxbury Children Services. She came to Boston as a Somali refugee when she was 12 years old and wants to be an advocate for the immigrant community in the city, particularly for Boston’s Somali population.
In 2017, Jibril ran for the seat that Councillor Kim Janey ultimately won, but failed to make it past the preliminary election.

Jibril now joins a crowded field of roughly a dozen candidates vying to replace Councillor Andrea Campbell to represent District 4.

Rep. Liz Malia has already thrown her support behind Jibril.

“She [Deeqo] brings the skills no one in this city has: insight, experience, courage, leadership, and determination. She will be an incredible addition to the City Council,” Malia said during a virtual campaign launch.
