Incumbent U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano still has a hefty lead over City Councillor Ayanna Pressley, who is challenging him for the Massachusetts 7th Congressional seat, according to a WBUR poll released today.

Registered voters likely to vote in the district’s Democratic primary favored the 10-term congressman over Pressley by 13 points, 48 percent to 35 percent.

As in past polling, the preferences break strongly along demographic lines -- white voters prefer Capuano to Pressley by 60 to 25 percent, while non-white voters say they go for Pressley by 49 to 31 percent. Pressley also has higher favorables from young voters -- 18- to 49-year olds pick her over Capuano by 41 to 33 percent -- but those older than 50 lean toward Capuano by 57 to 31 percent.

Pressley, who was the first woman of color elected to the Boston City Council in 2009, keeps a narrow edge in Boston, but Capuano maintains a strong lead in surrounding communities.
