Mother of murdered toddler pleads guilty

The mother of 2-year-old Bella Bond last week admitted to helping cover up her daughter’s murder, changing her plea from not guilty and agreeing to testify against the alleged killer, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.

Rachelle Bond was arrested in September 2015 after her daughter was identified as the toddler found in a trash bag washed up on a Deer Island shore. Prosecutors assert that Bond’s boyfriend at the time, Michael McCarthy, murdered the child in late May or early June of 2015. He has denied the charges and is due back in court on Feb. 23 before the trial in April.

In the months before Bella was identified, she was the subject of a wide and concerted effort to put a name to the unknown toddler, known only as “Baby Doe.” Bond told a friend in September that her daughter had been murdered and investigators were able to determine Bella’s identity.

Prosecutors allege that McCarthy killed the child in Bond’s home on Maxwell Street, later discarding her body in Boston Harbor. Bond concealed the death, “gave untrue and conflicting answers when asked where the girl was,” and received more than $1,300 from the state Department of Transitional Assistance, according to the district attorney’s office.

Bond is not being charged for any involvement in Bella’s death, but for aiding McCarthy in allegedly covering up the murder and continuing to receive state benefits intended to support her daughter’s care. At a hearing in Suffolk Superior Court on Feb. 10, Bond pleaded guilty to charges of being an accessory after the fact to murder and larceny over $250 by false pretense.

A statement Bond made to State Police with the district attorney’s office was later “substantially corroborated by independent evidence,” according to Assistant District Attorney David Deakin. Bond has expressed a desire to testify against McCarthy, accepting a plea deal for time served and two years probation in exchange for making herself available to law enforcement and testifying at McCarthy’s trial.

She will likely be sentenced after McCarthy’s trial and her next court date is May 22.
