While several state senators and representatives can sit securely in their seats for another term due to a lack of opposition in this year’s election, some familiar names have submitted signatures for certification and a place on the ballot.

State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry, of Dorchester, will be running unopposed for her seat representing the First Suffolk district. Also running unopposed are state representatives Russell Holmes in the 6th Suffolk, and Dan Hunt in the 13th Suffolk.

State Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz faces perennial candidate Roy Owens for the Second Suffolk district seat. The two faced off in the Democratic primary in 2014, with Chang-Diaz carrying the vote, 10,900 to 2,584.

There are races for the 5th, 7th, and 12th Suffolk state representative posts.

In the 5th, Rep. Evandro Carvalho will not see a challenge from deposed Rep. Carlos Henriquez, who had said he was mulling a run for his old seat, but he will face Althea Garrison, who will be running as a Republican, and Linda Stewart.

Rep. Gloria Fox announced earlier this year that she would not be seeking reelection for her 7th Suffolk seat. Her chief of staff, Mary-Dith Tuitt, has submitted signatures for the district. Also awaiting signature certification for the district are Monica Cannon, Chyna Tyler, and Joshua McFadden, who would run as an independent in November if he makes it to the ballot.

In contention for the 12th Suffolk seat are incumbent Rep. Dan Cullinane, Mattapan lawyer Jovan Lacet, and Carlotta Williams.

Potential candidates had to pull papers from Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin’s office and by submit signatures to the city’s Elections Department by this past Tuesday. All signatures will be certified by May 31, when the final ballots will be set, said a spokesman for Galvin’s office.
