The teenagers and kids who use the street hockey court at Adams/King Playground in Dorchester had a simple request this summer: They hoped to score two new hockey nets.

Neighbor Tom Leahy, of King Street, decided to do something about it two weeks ago and contacted Mayor Martin Walsh’s office for help.

“In my opinion, it’s probably the best street hockey court in the city,” said Leahy. “And we’re glad to have it in our neighborhood.”

But, Leahy added: “The old nets were quite worn and after each use they had to be reassembled.”

In response to Leahy’s request, Alec Bonelli of Mayor Walsh’s office reached out to Tony King of Beantown Sports to secure two new nets as soon as possible. On Monday evening, King and Beantown Sports arrived and installed the new nets.

“This means more games, more participation,” said Leahy, who leads regular clean-ups at the playground, which is also used for different sports, including soccer. Since the court was done over a few years ago it has been in really in good condition and has attracted quite a few neighborhood kids that go there to play sports and roller blade, he says.

“Even though the participation was strong, this will intensify it and it will give the kids what they deserve.”
Within half hour of delivery, there were already about six teens at the park using the improved court.
