Merchant leaders from the city’s Main Streets districts were honored at the 18th annual Boston Main Streets Awards, which took place at the historic Strand Theatre last Thursday, June 26. Mayor Martin Walsh, Department of Neighborhood Development Director Sheila Dillon and emcee Susan Wornick attended the event, in which awards were presented to the volunteers and businesses of the year. The mayor also announced new funds from the Boston Main Streets Foundation.

“This event is special because we get to honor the people in the neighborhoods who are making our Main Streets districts vibrant and welcoming places to shop and do business,” said Walsh. In the current funding round, the Foundation will provide eight new grants to Main Streets districts, including Bowdoin Geneva, totaling $40,000. Bowdoin Geneva Main Streets will use the funds to create an expanded business directory and to hire a consultant to assist all Bowdoin Geneva businesses with setting up Facebook pages. This year’s outstanding volunteers included Megan Sonderegger from Bowdoin-Geneva; Nadene Fallon from Fields Corner; Iris DuPont-Hurley of Four Corners; Robert Hector of Greater Grove Hall; Latarsha Ancrum of Mattapan Square; James Buckley of St. Mark’s Area ; and Cortney Trudel of Uphams Corner.

Each Main Streets district chooses one business to honor as Business of the Year. This year’s honorees included Brothers Wine and Spirits in Bowdoin-Geneva; D’Bennys Subs and More in Fields Corner; S.B.K.’s Convenience Food Store in Four Corners; Touch 106.1 FM in Greater Grove Hall; Mattapan Square Mobile Enterprise, Inc. in Mattapan Square; Back to Life Chiropractic and Wellness in St. Mark’s Area; and Discount Shoes Store in Uphams Corner.
