Today is Election Day. The 12-person field will be winnowed to two finalists who will face off on Nov. 5. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Candidates’ schedules, and a flashback to what newspapers were saying the morning of a preliminary 20 years ago, are available below.
ODDS & ENDS: WBUR’s David Scharfenberg has the story of “Uncle Frank” Chin.....El Planeta gets the preliminary date wrong (via WGBH’s Adam Reilly).....On Reddit, District 8 Councillor Michael Ross offers an answer to the age-old question of whether to fight one Duck Boat-sized Boston terrier or 100 Boston terrier-sized Duck Boats.....Savin Hill activist Bill Walczak slammed District Attorney Dan Conley for a “misleading” mailer. Conley’s mailer claims the prosecutor is the “only one candidate” in the race who backs a citywide vote. Walczak has railed against the proposal for a casino at Suffolk Downs and demanded a citywide vote instead of one limited to East Boston. Other candidates who support a citywide referendum include Councillor Charles Yancey and former School Committee member John Barros. During an appearance on the Boston Herald’s radio station, Conley defended the mailer, noting that the other side said Conley was the only one “of these candidates.” The candidates listed included state Rep. Marty Walsh, former state Rep. Charlotte Golar Richie, and Councillors John Connolly, Felix Arroyo, Rob Consalvo and Michael Ross.....A chart featuring the candidates’ homes, by Hilary Sargent.....And a chart by CommonWealth’s Paul McMorrow, breaking down donations by municipal employee dollars.

TOUCH 106.1 FM co-owner Charles Clemons told the Reporter last week he plans to be at the Boston Police VFW at 500 Morton Street for his Election Night party.
#BOSMAYOR FLASHBACK: On Sept. 21, 1993, voters went to the polls and chose 2 finalists out of an 8-person field: Acting Mayor Thomas Menino and Dorchester state Rep. Jim Brett faced off. Below is what the papers said on the day of the preliminary.
The Globe:
After a preliminary campaign that bore a greater resemblance to a public policy seminar than a tribal war, Boston voters today take the first step toward selecting their next mayor by winnowing the field of eight hopefuls to two.
The mayoral campaign appeared without warning in March, when President Clinton rewarded Raymond L. Flynn with the ambassadorship to the Vatican less than midway through Flynn's third term as mayor.
The glitch in the electoral calendar and the abbreviated campaign produced no clear front-runner, and an unusually civil competition among the candidates.
The Herald:
After 10 weeks of overt promises, veiled threats and more than a little hyperbole, the $3 million campaign of the eight mayoral candidates is now in the hands of Boston voters.
The sleepy campaign received a wake-up call last night in a raucous bit of finger-pointing and name-calling between supporters for state Rep. James T. Brett and City Councilor Bruce C. Bolling as Brett won an 11th-hour endorsement from state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson of Roxbury.
Menino and Brett would end up spending $26 per vote in the prelim, according to a tally put together by the Herald weeks later.
UPDATE: This post was updated at 1:47 p.m. with changes to Rep. Walsh's schedule.
