4 days to the Sept. 24 preliminary. The City Council’s economic development committee is holding a 12 p.m. hearing on the Suffolk Downs casino proposal and the plan for a Nov. 5 vote on the matter. Bill Walczak, whose opposition to a Boston casino is the centerpiece of his mayoral campaign, will testify. In a statement on Thursday, Walczak blasted the proposal as “magical thinking” and questioned the revenue figures behind the proposal. Walczak will again push the council to allow for a city-wide vote on the issue, a stance that has drawn public support in recent polls. District Attorney Dan Conley, who has also called for a city-wide vote, will hand-deliver a letter to the City Council and hold a media availability before the hearing. Most councillors have said they prefer an East Boston-only vote, since the casino would affect that neighborhood more than others. Mayor Thomas Menino also backs an Eastie-only vote. “I’m standing by my principles,” Menino told reporters on Thursday, firmly tapping the floor with his cane for emphasis, after one of them pointed out the poll numbers favoring a city-wide vote. Rep. Marty Walsh heads to South Station to release a plan to “address commercial sex industries” in the city. PRO-WALCZAK GROUP SPENDING $70K IN RADIO BUY: A group backing Bill Walczak’s mayoral campaign is spending $70,000 on a radio ad buy, according to filings on the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance’s website. The ads focus on Walczak and his opposition to casinos. The group, called Neighborhoods United, is chaired by attorney Herb Gleason and Ira Schlosser, who has worked at the Dorchester House. Donors to the effort include Larry Fish ($10,000), Roann Costin of Boston ($15,000), Shawmut Woodworking and Supply ($5,000) and Gleason ($2,500), among others. The group’s aim, according to its filing with OCPF, is “to improve public education, health and safety in the city of Boston by supporting candidates who have realized these goals.” Walczak, who called Gleason the “godfather to community health centers,” said the two campaigns have maintained “complete separateness,” as required by law.
