-- Boston.com will be hosting mini-debates next month, set up similar to the MassINC/CommonWealth magazine forums at the Palm restaurant. The mini-debates will be held at the Globe Lab, inside the Boston Globe’s headquarters on Morrissey Blvd.

-- Charlotte Golar Richie, a former state representative running for mayor, will be giving a speech next week at Hibernian Hall. The speech, set for Wed., July 31 at 7 p.m., is expected to outline her vision for the city.

-- State Sen. Anthony Petruccelli, an East Boston Democrat backing Councillor Rob Consalvo in the mayor’s race, wrote a letter this week to the chair of the Democratic Party in Massachusetts, asking whether a group supporting City Councillor At-Large John Connolly is allowed to use “Democrats” in their name. Petruccelli claimed Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) could be breaking a state law that does not allow a political organization seeking to influence an election cannot use the name of a political party without permission. “I am concerned that this outside group may have violated the law in pushing its agenda in this campaign,” Petruccelli wrote in a letter to John Walsh, the state party’s chairman.

Walsh, through a spokeswoman, issued a statement to the Reporter: "We've always considered fairness a priority in our work with candidates. This matter was just brought to our attention. We've neither received a request nor granted permission to the organization and we will be referring this to our legal counsel."

In May, the Los Angeles Democratic Party chair asked the Democrats for Education Reform’s chapter in the area to “cease and desist.” The chapter was co-founded by Democrats, according to a LA Times columnist, who says the spat is "illustrative of a deep division within the Democratic Party, especially in California, about how best to approach the question of improving schools."

The Consalvo camp has trained its fire on the local chapter of Democrats for Education Reform as it has pushed rival campaigns to sign a “Boston Pledge,” a bid to limit the effectiveness of outside groups in the campaign.

-- John Barros’s campaign is launching a voter engagement initiative, the camp said on Wednesday. The effort kicks off at the Ashmont MBTA stop on Monday, July 29, at 7 a.m. Barros, a community organizer, has served on the Boston School Committee and as executive director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative.

-- Bill Walczak, co-founder of the Codman Square Health Center, plans to unveil an “environmental blueprint for the city of Boston which details his plan to protect Boston’s environment, reduce carbon emissions and combat the threat of rising sea levels to the city,” his campaign said Wednesday. The press conference is scheduled for Thursday, July 25, at 1 p.m., at Malibu Beach, off of Morrissey Blvd. in Dorchester.
