Ward 5 Dems' chair considering run for Back Bay state House seat

Joshua Dawson, a top political aide to Treasurer Steven Grossman and chair of the Ward 5 Democratic Committee, is considering a run for outgoing state Rep. Marty Walz’s seat. Reached on the phone on Wednesday, Dawson said, "I'm strongly leaning that way."

Dawson previously served as legislative and budget director for state Sen. Thomas Kennedy (D-Brockton).

Walz is resigning in mid-February and taking a job as president and CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts in March. The organization's board signed off on her hiring on Tuesday night, the organization said in a Wednesday morning release.

The 8th Suffolk House seat includes Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the West End, and Cambridgeport and Kendall Square in Cambridge.

Walz has represented the district since 2005. In the House, Walz has served as assistant vice chair of the budget-writing Ways and Means Committee, and chaired the Education Committee.

The board's chair and interim CEO, Nonnie Burnes, in a statement, called Walz a "dedicated and accomplished advocate for women's health."

Walz is the latest Boston lawmaker to leave the State House: State Sen. Jack Hart (D-South Boston) is stepping down from his post on Friday and joining the law firm Nelson Mullins. Their departures are expected to be followed by special elections to fill their seats.
