A stretch of Gallivan Boulevard will close to motorists for roughly eight hours on Saturday night (April 5) until Sunday morning (April 6) as repairs are made to an MBTA-owned bridge that carries trains and trolleys over the roadway.
The boulevard will be closed between Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., according to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT).
"Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area," the agency said. "Drivers traveling through the affected area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution. All scheduled work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice."
The MassDOT press release added: "This closure is necessary to support MBTA work for the installation of a utility bridge adjacent to the tracks where they cross over the roadway."
The MBTA bridge work is related to an ongoing project at the transit agency's Codman Yard which supports rail service on the Ashmont leg of the Red Line. The three-year project has been the source of disruption and concern from some abutters on nearby streets and along the boulevard.
The MBTA is pausing rail service along the Red Line for nine days starting on April 1 as part of a planned "surge" to make other track and bridge improvements along the Dorchester end of the line.
