A non-profit grocery store in Mattapan Square will close its doors this weekend.

Daily Table, located on the ground level of The Loop building on River Street, will shut down at the end of the day on Sunday, Jan. 5, according to a letter sent to customers by CEO Sasha Purpura today.

The non-profit grocery chain's original store in Dorchester’s Codman Square will stay open. The chain operates three other shops were opened in Cambridge, Roxbury, and Salem.

Purpura said the store at 474 River St. — which opened in 2023— saw very few customers, up to 70 percent fewer than the other locations.

“The decision to close the store was made after careful consideration and reflects our commitment to ensuring that every dollar entrusted to us by our funders and supporters has a maximum social impact,” Purpura wrote in the announcement. “Unfortunately, the Mattapan location did not achieve the level of impact we had hoped for in addressing the high levels of food insecurity in the area.”

Last fall, the chain went public with its decision to temporarily pause its Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program at four of its five locations in September after it failed to get grant funding that previously supported the program.

The program, which provides EBT cardholders with an additional 50 percent off certain items, has since been re-instituted.

“While this was not the outcome we hoped for when we opened the store, we are proud to have served this community, are grateful for your support, and are eager to apply what we have learned from this experience to help inform future opportunities,” added Purpura.
