Saturday seminar aimed at Mattapan homeowners

A trio of Mattapan organizations will host a day-long seminar for homeowners focused on “preserving legacy wealth” this Saturday at the Mattahunt Community Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Mattapan Thrives event is organized by Own Your Legacy, a non-profit run by longtime resident Yionel Horez with support from the Cummins Highway Neighborhood Association and the Greater Mattapan Neighborhood Council (GMNC).

“If we start letting go of our property, we are never getting back in this neighborhood,” said Horez. “We have to preserve our spaces in this city for our families or it will be gone.”

Part of the program will honor 30 Mattapan residents who have owned homes for 30 years or more. Panels on how to preserve homes with trusts, and how to get proper life insurance so that family members don’t have to sell quickly to pay burial costs and debts are also planned, along with information on how to set up a will.

“In our community we don’t like to talk about death and that ends up putting us all in a tough position,” said Horez.

Mattapan Thrives is free, and food will be served. The Mattahunt is located at 100 Hebron St., Mattapan. For more information call 857-293-9865.
