Renovation work is underway at Walsh Park

Work crews fenced off Walsh Playground in Dorchester earlier this month and began work on the $3 million reconstruction of the seven-acre, city-owned park that is nestled between Lower Mills and Codman Hill. The project, which is expected to take about nine months to complete, will result in an improved girls’ softball field, tennis courts, and other amenities. The park’s basketball courts are also set to be rehabilitated, along with the installation of a water feature and shade structure. The playground is named for Gunnery Sgt. William Gary Walsh, who was killed in action in the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Seth Daniel photo
