One Boston Day took over Savin Hill last Friday (April 14) as scores of neighbors and members of the Columbia/Savin Hill Neighborhood Association joined volunteers from John Hancock to spruce up the neighborhood.
Workers focused on the park on Buttonwood Street, Paul’s Park on Howell Street, Savin Hill Avenue, and Savin Hill Beach.
The event was part of a weekend of service for One Boston Day, which is traditionally held on April 15 to mark the day of the Marathon Bombing in 2013.
In Paul’s Park, clean-up coordinator Des Rohan announced that the Carpenter’s Union on Dorchester Avenue would be rebuilding a pergola that had to be removed on Friday due to rot and deterioration.

Savin Hill’s Katrina Martin, and Kelly Nguyen (at right), of Dorchester and John Hancock, removed trash bags of debris from the sea grass on Savin Hill Beach. Martin said the grass is a magnet for refuse.
