Teens team up for ‘Dot Pot’ street hockey tourney

Dorchester has a simple motto: We take care of our own and we take care of each other. Last year, three Dorchester teens — Ryan Sweeney, Peter Cahill, and Timmy Galvin — decided to do just that. They created a roller hockey tournament with the help of family and friends to help raise funds for Carl Hosea, the father of one of their childhood friends who had been recently diagnosed with cancer.

The trio is at it again this year with plans for the second annual “Dot Pot” later in July to raise funds for a family in need. This year’s tournament proceeds will go to The Baker family. Michael Baker, a Boston Police officer, passed away suddenly in April. His widow, Christine, was recently diagnosed with cancer. They have three children.

“We want to help the family at all costs,” said Sweeney. “My only message is: whoever wants to help, anything is greatly appreciated.”

The tournament features 16 competitive teams from neighborhoods in and around Boston. Sweeney, Cahill, and Galvin are looking for corporate and family sponsors for this year’s event on July 30 and 31st at Garvey Park in Dorchester. They are asking for each sponsor to donate $100 to help pay for the shirts and other costs, but any donation is welcome.

To sponsor this year’s tournament and support The Baker Family, please make out your donation to “Baker Children’s Education Fund.” Donations can be sent to Ryan Sweeney, 26 Belton St., Dorchester, 02124.
