O’Neill, Cassetta to be honored at UMass breakfast

UMass Boston has been holding an annual community breakfast since 1987 to show appreciation for those who have dedicated their lives to serving Boston’s neighborhoods. Next week’s breakfast— set for Thurs., March 31 at 8:30 a.m. in the Campus Center’s third floor ballroom — will include presentations of the Robert H. Quinn Award for Outstanding Community Leadership and the Chancellor’s Award for Longstanding Community Commitment and Service.

Patricia (Pat) O'NeillPatricia (Pat) O'NeillThis year’s awardees include Patricia (Pat) O’Neill, a lifelong resident of Dorchester, a community leader, and dedicated volunteer who will receive the Quinn Award. The Chancellor’s Award will go to James J. Cassetta, the president and CEO of Dorchester-based Work, INC.

“For us, it is a way for the chancellor and the university to recognize those that do the brunt of the work. It is something we embrace within the community and make it a positive presence on campus and within the surrounding communities,” said Philip J. Carver, Interim Director of Community Relations at UMass Boston and a past Quinn Award honoree.

O’Neill is the president of the Ashmont Adams Neighborhood Association who organizes well-known community events and fundraisers, like the Dorchester Chili Cook-off and tree lightings.

“Pat does so much, and she is one of the most dynamic and sincere individuals that I have come across as a community leader,” said Carver. “She is phenomenal, and it was a no-brainer for the committee.”

James J. CassettaJames J. CassettaCassetta, an East Boston native, has dedicated his life to working and helping individuals living with disabilities. At Work, INC., Cassetta has opened doors and allowed access to mental health services and has increased the availability of vocational opportunities and rehabilitation programs.

“He is taking people that, a generation ago, would be homebound and need public assistance, and he is turning around and giving them careers. It is remarkable what he is able to do, and that it is happening right here in Dorchester,” said Carver.
