Tania Fernandes Anderson, the Boston city councillor who pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges earlier this year, says she has "officially" submitted her letter of resignation. In a email sent to supporters today, Fernandes Anderson said the resignation is effective July 4, 2025.
"It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve you, my neighbors, my community, my people," she said in the note addressed "Dear District 7 Family."
Fernandes Anderson pleaded guilty in April to charges that she engineered a kickback scheme involving $7,000 in city funds through one of her employees. The charges included one count of wire fraud and one count of theft involving federal funds. According to WBUR, prosecutors sought a sentence of one year in prison, with three years of supervised release and restitution of $13,000 in a plea agreement. As part of the deal, Fernandes Anderson said she would resign, but did not give a specific date, until now.
Fernandes Anderson was arrested last December at her home in Dorchester and ignored calls for her to resign that came swiftly from Mayor Wu and other colleagues at City Hall.
Council President Ruthzee Louijeune confirmed that the City Clerk received formal notice of the resignation today.
"Our responsibility to residents remains unchanged in moments of transition," Louijeune said in statement. "As Council President and At-Large Councilor, I am committed to ensuring that the residents of District 7 continue to feel heard, supported, and well-represented."
Louijeune added: "My office will be even more active and present in the district, working directly with residents in the community to address concerns and maintain essential constituent services. We are taking every step to ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruption during the upcoming vacancy."
Eleven candidates are currently running to replace Fernandes Anderson in the District 7 council seat. The preliminary election is Sept. 9.
