Every December, youth hockey teams around the city compete for the title of “Boston’s Best” in the Mayor’s Cup Ice Hockey Tournament. This winter, Dorchester’s A “Red” team earned the Mite title in the 31st annual competition, which started on Dec. 5 and culminated— after 134 games in nine rinks— on Dec. 23.
Roughly 1,500 athletes from seven programs, – Dorchester, Allston-Brighton, S.C.O.R.E Boston, Charlestown, Hyde Park, Parkway, and South Boston – competed in 15 divisions. While only one Dorchester Youth Hockey team took home a citywide banner, the U-8 Girls, Mite Gold, and Squirt Gold teams made it to the finals.
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department hosted the Mayor’s Cup with support from the Boston Bruins Foundation and P&G Gillette. The tournament also received substantial support from BC, BU, UMass Boston, Massachusetts DCR, and FMC Ice Sport.
