Mayor Walsh "not too confident" that schools will re-open this academic year

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said Monday afternoon that he's "not too confident that we'll have school this year."

At a press conference outside city hall, Walsh said talks about whether to reopen schools are continuing in government.

"I don't think there's any question, kids aren't going back to school May 4th," Walsh said.

Looking ahead to the traditional opening of schools in September, Walsh said, "It could be a very different looking situation in the classrooms."

Efforts made now to slow the spread of COVID-19, Walsh said, will could prevent another surge of the virus in a few months, which Walsh said is "a fear that we all have."

Gov. Charlie Baker said late last week and again on Monday that he is aware that schools and families want clarity about the future, and said a decision on whether to reopen schools this academic year will be announced soon.
