Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Tuesday selected U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris of California as his running mate, a spot that Sen. Elizabeth Warren was in the running for and would have accepted.
Biden's choice leaves Warren in the Senate with four more years left on her six-year term.
Warren may have a chance at a greater role in that branch should Democrats take control of the Senate after the elections, and also could surface as a possible Biden appointee, should he win the election.
In a tweet announcing his choice, Biden described Harris -- herself a former contender for the Democratic presidential nomination -- as "a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country's finest public servants."
