The Strand Theatre will host the Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre company for a series of performances of “The Nutcracker” this holiday season, with 13 shows scheduled over a ten-day period from Dec. 14 to Dec. 23.

Since its premiere in Fall River in 1988, Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre has continued one of New England’s longest running productions of the classic ballet, regularly presenting shows in Boston, Springfield, Worcester, and Lowell. According to the company’s website, their version of The Nutcracker “focuses more on the dancing than on the usual caricatured mime, pomp, and special effects of its predecessors.”

“While José Mateo Ballet Theatre takes pride in its ongoing mission to create new classical ballets, it is a pleasure to return each year to “The Nutcracker” as a salute to the traditional roots of the ballet form,” reads a statement on the company’s website. “After nearly a thousand performances over the last 30 years, we have created a tradition of our own. Families return year after year to revisit Mother Ginger and her children, the dancing snowflakes, the waltzing flowers, and the Sugar Plum Fairy with her cavalier.”

Show times at the Strand: Friday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 16 at 1:30 and 5 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 22 at 2 and 7p.m.; and Sun., Dec. 23 at 1:30 and 5 p.m.

Tickets start at $25. For more ticket information, visit ballettheatre.org.
