Jazz-infused Pieces of CANE/KABNIS set for Hibernian Hall premeire: Three performances set for June 23 - 25th

Bill Lowe

World-renowned jazz musician Bill Lowe will stage Pieces of CANE/KABNIS!, a 21st century adaptation of Harlem Renaissance writer Jean Toomer’s critically acclaimed novel CANE, at Roxbury’s Hibernian Hall for three 8p.m. shows from Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25.

Set in rural Georgia during the 1920s, the drama includes music, movement, and video and nine actors who are cast, directed, and choreographed by Jacqui Parker in conversation with Bill Lowe’s seven-piece Signifyin’ Natives Jazz Ensemble. All of the video animation for this production was created by FiLmprov’s Kate Matson.

Tickets ($30 general admission, $15 for seniors and students) can be purchased online at hibernianhall.org or at the door.

Lowe’s creative interpretation of the third section of Jean Toomer’s CANE, includes a series of poems, several of which have been set to music by Lowe for the production, and short stories depicting African-American life and themes in the early 20th century. Lowe intends for the lives and themes presented to be recognizable and relevant to all of us now, in the beginning of the 21st century.

Bill Lowe says,  “The creation of KABNIS! is a gathering of forces and a focus of my skills in music, theater, and literature, all in collaboration with Jacqui and the actors and Kate and the musicians as we coax Toomer’s characters to come to life on the Hibernian stage.”

Members of the cast include: Born Bikim, Bill Bruce, Jermaine Hamilton, Candis Hilton, Anthony Hinds, Jorge Lopes, Myisha Rodrigues-Scott, Brian Savage, and Andrea Whitfield.
