Safe Summer Streets Career Fair
This past Wednesday, as part of the Safe Summer Streets program for teens, the Club hosted the 5th Annual Summer Career Fair which was attended by over 70 teens and 15 professional panelists.
Members were able to hear from a variety of professionals during the night speaking on their respective careers including: how they got to where they are today; likes and dislikes of their jobs; educational background and; suggestions for teens on choosing the right career. Immediately afterwards the teens and professionals were invited downstairs for dinner and a chance to mingle. Our volunteer panelists included: Frank Campbell (Union Painter/Teacher), Dan Collins (Assistant Branch Manager/Sovereign Bank), Dr. Claudio DeBarros (Club Alumnus & Pediatric Resident, Tufts Medical Center), Paul Colligan (Programs Manager, The Greater Boston Food Bank), Kevin Roach (Teacher/High School Basketball Coach), Rod MacKinnon (Firefighter), Francisco Amado (Finance), Ed Connolly (Construction Supervisor), Lawrence Clark (M.B.T.A. Police Officer), Michael Christopher (Government Relations), Linda Roach (Elderly Services Program Manager), Shakira McLyons (Advertising), Amy Damsker (International Health) and Anand Satymoorthy (Design Engineer). Safe Summer Streets Basketball League
The 16-team Safe Summer Streets Basketball League will complete regular season play this week before heading into the post-season tournament beginning Saturday, August 13th. During the past week games were played in the evening hours with Monday’s opener of the 4-team Girls division seeing the Lady Thunder defeating the Lady Cavs 73-45. Candace Andrews (27) and Kayla O’Brien (10) led the Lady Thunder while the Lady Cavs were led by Markiah Monteiro (18) and Jennifer Tavares (13). In the second game Regina Crawford (40) and Naiomy Bailey (14) led the way for the Lady Zags as they defeated the Lady Tigers 59-57. The Lady Tigers were led by Cadejia Matthews (28) and Jessica Teixeira (11). On Tuesday it was two more games from the Girls division with the opener seeing the Lady Tigers defeating the Lady Thunder 51-44. Cadejia Matthews (16) and Brittney Andrews (15) led the Lady Tigers while the Lady Thunder were led by Destinee Morris (18) and Kayla O’Brien (16). In the next game it was the Lady Zags, led by Regina Crawford (24) and Shalise DePina (22), defeating the Lady Cavs 68-47. The Lady Cavs were led by Donika Morris (20) and Jennifer Tavares (12). On Wednesday evening, the league took the night off as the teens took part in the Annual Career Fair. Games for the two divisions of play for the Boys returned on Thursday with the first of three seeing Jr. Dynasty take down the Young Gunners 63-48. Teammates Armani Correia (17) and Terrell Davis (14) led the offense for Jr. Dynasty while Brandon Gulley (15) and Jerry Lopes (9) led the Young Gunners. In the middle game it was Lights Out taking out the Cape Ryders 64-56. Rayshaw Matthews (30) and Johnathon Lopes (11) led the way for Lights Out while Tyrik Jackson (22) and Kaylab Silva (12) led the Cape Ryders. In the late game Showtime, behind the duo of Philip Lodge (27) and Eduardo DeLeon (25), defeated the Rat Pack 72-58. Shaquille Robinson (14) and Bernard Barbosa (13) paced the offense for the Rat Pack. On Friday, the first of three games saw Lights Out defeat the Bullets 65-64. Rayshaw Matthews (23) and Stanley Harris (21) paced the attack for Lights Out while Dwayne Harper (17) and Tre Fernandes (15) led the way for the Bullets. In the second game Jr. Dynasty used a balanced attack to hold off the Young Gunners 57-49. Jr. Dynasty was led by Shaquille Robinson (24) and Walter Dew-Hollis (14) while Damonte Turner (13) and Brendan Paez (9) led the Young Gunners offense. In the late game Run & Gun held on to defeat A.D.S.L. 73-68. Nick Simpson (25) and Paul Lewis (23) led the Run & Gun offense while A.D.S.L. was led by Tristan Mullin (22) and Jessie Clark (21). On Saturday evening the final four games of the week were held with the opener seeing the Cape Ryders defeat the Rat Pack 82-60. Andre Wideman (30) and Tyrik Jackson (28) led the Cape Ryders while the Rat Pack were led by Bernard Barbosa (30) and Maxwell Spinola (12). In the second game Lights Out pulled out an 81-72 win over Run & Gun. Rayshaw Matthews (30) and Daquan Hardy (19) led the Lights Out offense while Nick Simpson (36) and Tyrell Pugh (24) led the way for Run & Gun. In the next game it was Jr. Dynasty taking down the Bombers 73-68. Shaquille Robinson (36) and Terrell Davis (14) led Jr. Dynasty while Davonte Hall (26) and Ralph Jean-Baptiste (21) led the Bombers. In the final game of the week Showtime defeated A.D.S.L. 86-76. Philip Lodge (30) and Jonge DaSilva (25) led Showtime while A.D.S.L. was led by the trio of Tristan Mullin (29), Jesse Clark (17) and Hemraj Shivraj (17).
