Two launch bids for honorary ‘Mayor of Dorchester’

The Mayor of Dorchester contest has fielded its first two contestants— with room for more to join the friendly fray in the coming weeks. Dorchester native David Anderson and Lower Mills business owner Carlos Vargas are both seeking the honorary title, which is awarded to the person who raises the most funds for the Dorchester Day Parade.

To be eligible to participate, you must be either a current or past resident of Dorchester or be an owner or employee of a Dorchester business, according to Kelly Walsh, the president of the Dot Day committee.

Within the past three years, the Mayor of Dorchester contest has collectively raised close to $40,000. Last year’s Mayor of Dorchester winner— Deirdre Habershaw— raised over $12,000. Past “mayors” have included Mike Mackan, Katie Hurley, Kelly Butts, Erin Murphy, Mary McCarthy, Craig Galvin, Cam Charbonnier, Susan Lombardi-Verticelli and Pat Walsh, the late uncle of the actual mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh.

Candidates for the title typically hold special events to raise funds for the parade, which will benefit the various events held throughout the year and are additionally used for the supplies and performance groups that participate in the parade.

Anderson said he was inspired to run after attending the Dot Day Kickoff event last weekend, a panckage breakfast featuring costumed characters like Mickey Mouse.

“I thought it was awesome. I thought how we need more of this, and I know the more money [the parade committee] can get, the more family-friendly the parade will be,” said Anderson. “If everyone gives me 10 bucks in my phone, I’ll raise $25,000.”

So far, the strategy is working: Anderson has already raised just over $4,000. You may also donate to his cause by visiting his GoFundMe page. Anderson is also planning on hosting a fundraising event. The details are still being finalized.

The contest end date is subject to change, but the current deadline for contestants to turn in their donations is Tuesday, May 9 at 7 p.m.

“People who wish to enter the contest must complete an entry form at the next Committee meeting that will be held on Tuesday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Ramada Inn on Morrissey Boulevard,” said Walsh, who said prospective candidates who cannot attend the meeting can e-mail her at kellywalsh@dotdayparade.com.”
