Epiphany School adds solar array to its rooftop

Dorchester’s Epiphany School has a new solar array on its roof. The 25 kilowatt panels were installed by Hopkinton-based Solect Energy, which specializes in helping small businesses and organizations reduce energy costs.

“We’re trying to participate in renewal energy here at the school. We would like to do our part to contribute to the movement to try and stop climate change,” said Will Brown, the Director of Student Support for Epiphany. “We would be saving some money and I think down the line in the future, we would ideally try to find points of intersection between the solar array and the programming here at the school and within the learning that takes place in the classroom.”

The solar array builds on other initiatives at the school, including a gardening program, healthy eating meal plan and cooking classes. Solect Energy estimates that Epiphany School will save $31,000 over the 20-year contract term.

“Epiphany took a leadership position on this. It wasn’t easy and they really persisted for years to get the solar project done and I’m happy they could it with us. I hope a lot of other schools in Dorchester follow their lead,” said Alex Keally of Solect Energy.
