A call to ‘root out’ street violence in Bowdoin Geneva

The news that a seven-year-old boy was hit by a bullet in the buttocks and knocked off his bike on Bowdoin Street on Sunday has ratcheted up greatly what has been a simmering tension in the Bowdoin Geneva neighborhood in the last few weeks over continual violence in the streets.

Saying “our neighborhood is again in the news for all the wrong reasons,” community leaders, clerics, and civic groups have issued a call for all residents to come to an “emergency community mobilization meeting” on Thursday night (May 28) at 6:30 p.m. at the Teen Center at St. Peter’s.

In a flyer that was being distributed across the neighborhood on Wednesday, its two dozen or so signers wrote, “The violence that has been plaguing our community for far too long must be addressed with coordinated efforts from multiple city departments, law enforcement, service agencies, and residents. … Our goal is to have a consistent, coordinated city commitment to root out the violence in our neighborhood. And we need you there to hear our concerns and ideas and to marshal a response that addresses our community’s deep-seated needs.”

The latest incident of that violence involved Divan Silva of Brockton, who was visiting with his grandmother over the holiday weekend, According to police reports, the boy got on a bike late Sunday afternoon and headed to a corner store on Bowdoin Street to buy some water. Shots rang out and he tumbled to the ground, a scene shown in graphic detail in images that the Boston Globe published on Wednesday, saying they came from a private surveillance camera. The last scene shows Divan’s mother rushing to his side as he probes the area of his wound. In very short order, rescuers and police were on the scene and the second-grader was transported to Children’s Hospital where the latest reports said he was doing well after surgery on Monday.

Police are looking for a teenager in connection with the shootings, which also saw the wounding of a 20-year-old man at the scene. They say witnesses described the shooter as a heavy-set male of about 5 foot 8, aged 14 to 18 and wearing a red hoodie, white shorts, and white sneakers.

Police ask anyone with information related to the incident to call Dorchester district detectives at 617-343-4335. Anonymous tips can be left at the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS or by texting the word TIP to 27463.

In that regard, both Mayor Martin Walsh and Police Commissioner William Evans have pleaded with the public to come forward if they have something to advance the investigation. On Tuesday, Evans told reporters that the department found public response to date “disappointing,” given the number of people who were in the neighborhood on Sunday afternoon.

Father Jack Ahern, pastor of St. Peter’s Parish, said on Wednesday that “one percent of the population is creating chaos in then Bowdoin Geneva neighborhood and what we’re saying is that we’re going to work together to make our streets safe. Every stakeholder (parishes, clinic, anyone) is just saying enough is enough. It’s not even summer yet and we need to make sure everyone is on the same page.

I think it’s going to be a good meeting Thursday night, a necessary meeting. It’s being brought together by the civic associations. We want our neighborhoods to be safe for our families.”
